Embellishment...

One of my favorite trends for the upcoming summer and fall season is creative embellishment. Lace, sheer fabric, and beading are the top three. If you ever wanted to create your own unique look with a basic pattern, now is the time to start.

I can't help but think of KOOS when I view some of the wild combinations coming down the runways. I actually had the opportunity to visit his studio in NY a few years ago. Simply amazing!

One of his techniques was the inspiration behind the two pieces you see below. These are just basic jacket and dress patterns sewn out of an Italian cotton fabric. The design you see comes from a leopard lace fabric, cut into small pieces and hand beaded onto the garment. This is just one idea you can do to your basic jacket pattern. Be creative!

A Touch of Silver & Gold...

Silver and gold are not just for Christmas anymore; it looks like this trend is becoming a staple in the wardrobe category for the next two seasons...from simple sequin tanks to lamé shorts. Although I will be passing on the shorts, I really like the idea of adding a little sparkle to my everyday look.

Just a few tips for sewing with sequin knit or lamé fabrics:

  • Make sure you use a new sewing machine needle.
  • Use a stretch needle size 10 or 12.
  • Set the sewing machine stitch length 2.5 or 3.0. Sew a small swatch and check to make sure the seam is not puckering.
  • Use a double needle to hem, unless you are lucky enough to have a "coverstitch" on your serger.

Burda 7645 would be a great pattern to try out with a sequin fabric. This look with a belt is very popular right now, but you could also tuck the tank into jeans and add a cute jacket.

This Burda Style Pattern 7354 is another great pattern right now and I would change the fabric to silk charmeuse or a printed chiffon for a completely different look.

With all the gorgeous sheer fabrics that are available right now, I would have a hard time passing up on Vogue 8504. Even the pants are a nice cut.

Quick Trend Update

Going into summer...

  • Top colors: white, salmon, teal
  • Top design: stripes (be careful with those ... check out my blog for tips)
  • Top fabrics: lace, chiffon, sheer, light weight knits
  • Top shoes: wedge heels and chunky heels

Going into fall...

  • Top colors: I am not through all the runway shows yet, but I am seeing A LOT of grey, bronze, and emerald green
  • Top design: mixing prints and novelty fabrics - think of scrapbooking on clothing or a collage!
  • Top fabric: fur, leather, and lace (sounds like a great movie :))
  • Hand bags in many colors

For those of you looking for a very easy top, try Vogue Patterns 8651 Misses' Tunic. I have a similar top in my Spring Collection out of bamboo knit. It is so comfortable and flattering!

I hope you try something new this month and always feel free to ask me any questions!

Vogue 8651 would look great on many figures, including a figure with larger hips / tummy as long as you choose the right fabrics. Soft knit fabrics like viscose/spandex or a light weight knit would be very flattering. What fabric are you thinking of?

Thank you. I have the Vogue 8651, I might try and make it this weekend. I saw a post and pictures from MJMtrims showing the collage look of some outfits. It is going to be interesting to say the least!

Thanks for the tips. How would Vogue 8651 work on women with larger hips/belly?
