White, It's Everywhere ... How to Wear it.

Phillip Lim, photo Style.com | In case you haven't noticed white is all over the map this year. White shorts, capris, jeans, skirts, tops, tailored jackets ... you name it, right now it's available in white. On the plus side, white compliments so many other colors; unfortunately, white is also one of the most difficult colors to wear. Many complexions look better with a cream or off-white rather than bright white. If you watched American Idol this past season you couldn't miss the fact that Jennifer Lopez is absolutely gorgeous, not to mention she was recently named the "world's most beautiful woman" by "People Magazine". Jennifer wore white tops in quite a few of the early episodes and even with TV makeup, bright white washed her out terribly. My point, even the world's most beautiful woman has a hard time wearing white by itself. Here are a few suggestions for those of us that also have trouble pulling off one of the most popular colors of the moment:
White blouse
- Add a jacket in one of your flattering colors or try a scarf
- Wear the blouse open with a colored tank underneath
White tank or lower neckline stretch-T
- Add a colorful chunky necklace
White jacket
- Choose wisely the top you wear underneath , make sure it is one of your color
- Add colorful hand trim to the edge of the jacket collar
White shirt dress
- Add a colorful beaded necklace or belt

Prints and dyed fabrics are very popular right now, so you can easily add one of these trendy tops to white bottoms. When purchasing or sewing white pants, skirts, and shorts you should pay attention to a few details:
- Check the thickness of the fabric
If the fabric is lightweight - you might need to add lining
- Choosing a fabric with a little stretch helps prevent wrinkles
- Choose your seam finishes wisely in case it shows through on the right side
- When purchasing a finished garment, be realistic in the mirror
Can you see the front pockets thru the fabric - if so you can easily remove them
Check the back view - can you see through the pants?
- I know I have said this before, but wear skin colored lingerie underneath white to prevent see through surprises. In other words, try to avoid wearing bright colored polk-a-dot panties
A Few Patterns for Ideas
This Vogue Pattern would look great in white with a contrasting trim.

Another idea are these cute shorts from Burda.
