| One Fabric Wool Contest Winners | By Deepika on 12/29/09 2:51 PM |
The focus of this contest was wool, one of our premier natural fibers. Our 39 contestants submitted garments made of knit or woven fabric. The rules required pure wool and not a blend. The warmth of wool made many contestants think "jacket" or "coat", but the gallery shows the overall versatility of the entries. Check out what contestants entered. Aren't the entries great?
Lets find out who won!
First Prize: yorkshire lass For Marfy 1444 Fitted Jacket with Peplum

Made of wool tweed, this jacket presented a challenge in more ways than one. The pattern, Marfy 1444, came with no instructions, sending yorkshire lass to her library and the Internet to research how to put the garment together. But she persevered, loving the style of this form fitting jacket, which is cut in the waistline and has a strip side piece secured to the rounded peplum with a button, french style hip pockets, and a collar with wide lapel. She feels that the defined waist really suits her body type, and she added a center back seam to make altering the back easier. She also notes that since each quarter of the jacket is in three pieces, alterations could be split between seams, making it easier for her to get a custom fit. | Second Prize: colorkitten For Butterick 7229 Vintage Girl's Coat

The challenge for colorkitten was to make a coat for a little girl who hates coats...her five-year-old daughter. So she enlisted the little girl's help in selecting the fabric and the design (a sure way to coax her into the final product). Using a 1955 vintage pattern for girl's coats, she sewed the double breasted coat with a single collar in a 100% wool double-faced melton.
Tailoring the pattern to her daughter was a lot of work, since her daughter is in between two sizes. In addition, this pattern is quite fitted and has 8 flared princess-seamed gores. She says that narrowing and lengthening them while keeping the integrity of the pattern was a monumental task that required tons of tracing and two muslins with lots of ripping and tweaking on both.
But the result? A happy little girl! See her testing out the all-important twirl factor. |
