Discuss Sewing Machines with PR members Sewing Machine Forum | | What MaryStern likes about this machine In July of last year I purchased this machine for $349 from HSN.com and it came with a large value added package, including an acrylic 18 X 24 inch extension table capable of sewing different size circles. This machine was a joy to sew on and very easy to operate. Since I have a couple of machines, I had a young friend who needed one and gave this machine to her after I had been heavily using it without problems for several months.
When I saw the HD 5532 on sale at HSN.com this month for the price of $239, including all of the extras I received the first time, I grabbed it. I actually missed sewing on this simple uncomplicated machine and was happy to re-purchase it.
The straight stitch is excellent, as well as the other utilitarian and decorative stitches. It does take a little time to know what the stitch length and width should be to get the look you want, but this helps me really know the machine. I LOVE the saddle stitch on this machine for topstitching!!
It is not hard to change the needle or feet, and while the exterior is plastic, it is of a very durable type, with a metal bed and internal metal frame. No shaking when sewing at high speeds, and it is easy to control the speed with the presser foot.
The machine easily sewed through a heavy canvas sandwich with peltex in between. Recently when I hemmed a pair of jeans for my son with my computerized machine, it did not like that job and I almost threw out its timing! Hence, my longing for a mechanical machine once more.
Last year I had to shorten from the top over 20 panels of crushed polyester voile. I used a number 70 needle and Aeorfil Thread by Madeira and in record time I was done without one jam, or one needle or thread breaking. Polar fleece and stretch knit fabrics were no problem and the machine does have Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure if you want to adjust it for some reason.
The foot pedal is pretty responsive so I don't even miss the needle/up down feature. This Singer machine is really one of the great ones! What MaryStern does not like about this machine The light is really dim and basically lets you know the machine is on; however, I have a great table lamp and the light is not an issue for me. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. Oh you good hearted friend! I think a repeat buy really says it all. I own the Singer 4423 Heavy Duty--just like yours but has fewer stitches and I agree with all you wrote!
