What Bethgo likes about this machine I traded my Viking Emerald 183 and upgraded to this machine. All I can say is wow. I love most everything about it. For one, it sews very smoothly and the stitch quality is better than my 183 which often moaned and groaned through mediocre stitching. The built-in scissors feature is the main reason I traded up and it has not disappointed. I really like the lighting system. Three strategically placed LED lights really help. The machine is very quiet compared to my 183. I also like that I can wind the bobbin from the needle. It saves time. The bobbin sensor is a cool feature as well. I was startled the first time it went off, I thought I had broken my machine (my 183 was always beeping at me), but it was nice to know that I had about a yard of thread left. I really like this machine. It just seems sturdier than my 183, more solid. I am really enjoying sewing with my Opal 670. One word I would use to describe it is smooth. What Bethgo does not like about this machine I don't like that the needle plate was metric only. I very quickly ordered an inches plate. I also did not like that I lost some feet in the trade in as the Emerald 183 comes with 10 or 11 feet and the Opal comes with only 6 feet. I don't like the storage compartment. My 183 had a compartment in the front and it had little dividers to help keep my feet organized. My Opal has a compartment in the back and it has no organizer. Also I can't open and close the storage compartment when the walking foot is on the machine which is annoying. The sewing adviser screen can be inaccurate. When I work with the alphabet, it often selects the letter next to the one I chose even when I use the included stylus. It takes some patience. Also the alphabets are nothing special. Viking boasts that the machine has four alphabets but two of them are characters for foreign languages (Russian and Japanese) so they are fairly useless for me. All of these issues are very minor and I still think it is a great machine for all of the bells and whistles you get. |

Oh boy, I have been searching for Japanese fonts for years now. Often regretted not buying my BL when I lived in Japan. I would asked about the fonts- hiragana? But it sounds like you dont know. Perhaps I need to visit a Viking dealer.

Hi, Nice review. I have a Designer SE and a Designer Diamond. Mine have electronic foot lift. If I lift to the highest position I can get the back storeage area open. Try holding the foot in the highest position and see if you can open the storeage area. Glad you love the machine!

It sounds like you have a calibration issue with your screen. There should be an option to make adjustments in settings somewhere. Check your manual, or ask at the dealer. I didn't know that this was an easy fix for my Ruby until I took the user's class.

Thanks all for the advice and help. I appreciate it. BTW no electronic foot lift on the Opal. No fabric sensor either.

@sandiMacD I checked the manual and the font is Hiragana. :)
