|What rtrittel likes about this machine|
This is Brother's special Laura Ashley machine, with over 30 built-in embroidery designs specific to Laura Ashley - these designs are quite lovely. I purchased the machine at the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo in Atlanta. It was a major purchase for me but well worth the investment, IMHO.
This machine embroiders beautifully. It also sews garments and quilts quite well. My favorite things about this machine are the thread cutting mechanism, the auto-threading/needle threader, and the embroidery unit. It is not terribly noisy, as other machines I've owned have been. It is also quite pretty, with it's pink hood (okay, I am a girly-girl!)
What rtrittel does not like about this machine
Well, I seem to have difficulty with the tension on occasion. It struggles going over multiple heavy layers (such as the seams of a denim skirt I made). Also, I have yet to figure out how to self-thread the machine, which means I cannot use a twin needle. But that is probably my lack of attention to reading the manual.
And of course there is the lack of markings that Brother machines tend to favor. Why, oh why are the measurements listed AFTER the needle? I have rectified this by using several measuring implements (painters tape, seam guides, etc), but really, it would be so easy for the manufacturer to simply mark on the plate the measurements from the needle in center position. It is, though, a tiny quibble in the entirety of this machine.
I love my 'Jane' - as I have named her (yes, an Austen fan to the end!) and I feel my investment has paid rich dividends of hours of enjoyment, sewing, quilting and embroidering.
