said... Well done, Shirley! I enjoyed reading your review. I was especially intrigued with your description of Loes mastery of fabric/pattern combinations. I tend to concentrate on construction methods so much, I forget to enjoy the construction process. Thanks! 9/15/02 12:08 PM

said... Thanks for the well-written review. (Especially part about agreeing with me-haha.) I think narrowing the collar and shortening the jacket are both good ideas. You are right about the shoulder pads. I didn't use them, but it's true the jacket would look better on me with the pads. 9/15/02 4:31 PM
said... Alex, the style is not ideal for my body, but I knew that going in. Among patterns that would work best to give an Oriental feel without being fully Oriental in style, this the one that is least UNbecoming on me, I believe. I look best in short, semi-fitted, tailored jackets, preferably with a shaped front. I am taking this one as a personal challenge to fiddle with proportion and the like until I am happy with the way it looks on me. Right now, my overall impression is that the style really, REALLY prefers a small bust. The muslin looks matronly to me even on my dress form. (Could this possibly be because I am of a matronly age and shape? How did that happen?) :) 9/15/02 6:31 PM
said... Shirley, well done review, and the jacket looks much nicer than I expected, given your comments. My only suggestion would be to make the next muslin a little bit shorter or a little longer. From the picture, it appears that the jacket is the same length as the sleeves and is creating a horizontal. 9/22/02 4:44 PM
said... I think Nan is right about the horizontal line. I actually think the jacket would look nice longer on you, perhaps paired with a slim pair of pants, or shorter paired with the type of skirt you are wearing in this photo. Just thinking of the old 2/3 - 2/3 proportion rules! 9/22/02 4:58 PM
said... Oops - of course I meant to say 2/3 - 1/3 proportions are the most flattering. 9/22/02 5:00 PM
said... Nan, Ruth, Thanks for the tip. The sleeves are only about 2" longer than the jacket's length. I cut the jacket length after I put the collar on, as I was not sure if I was going to want to shorten it until I could see it with the collar. Ruth, 1/3-2/3 is only an option for me if a jacket stops exactly at my waist and my skirt is 33". The skirt in the photo is about 33"; obviously, that's nearly full length on me. 35" is full length on me. When they were handing out legs, I thought they said eggs, and I was not hungry at the time. ;) I have pulled fabric for a second muslin, mostly to try to eliminate the bust darts; I'll shorten it up about 4" and see how it drapes! Thanks again! :D 9/22/02 6:56 PM

Wow, that is your ugly magenta fabric? it makes me wonder what other gorgeous things that you have made. 9/23/02 8:48 PM
Julia Graham said... Shirley, from other reviews/photos I have been uninterested in this pattern, but your terrific review and garment (I have to agree with your DH -- I like that fabric, I think especially in combination with the collar fabric you chose) are making me rethink. I'm certainly always in the market for things that require a small bust. :-) Great review! 4/27/03 6:31 PM
