Fabric panels are not to be scoffed at. I think this sounds grand. I especially like your idea of putting a clear plastic pocket to preserve the continuity of the fabric. Would love to see a pic - any chance???

Aprons are great for teachers. My aunt teaches 2nd grade and has them to match her units i.e. solar system, frogs, numbers, letters, etc... She calls them her Ms. Frizzle outfits (from the Magic Schoolbus series).
