Great review. I love this coat and have made it twice, the first time when the pattern first appeared. I still wear it also. I hadn't thought about it but your point about fuzziness is very true.

This pattern has been in my stash for years! This is the year for me. I am making a muslin before the summer, since I am going to up-state NY at the end of Aug. Last year I went to the wool festival with my DMIL and saw this amazing, hand dyed wool. The lady is willing to sell by the yard, so I have a goal (-: Thank you for a wonderful review on a great looking coat!

Yes. I want to make this coat, too. I have the pattern. Made the blouse. The siren song of the coat has been calling for awhile. Your tips about fuzzy fabric are helpful. I was wondering whether the coat would stay closed in wind.

I too have had this pattern for years. I live in CA so not much call for such and coat - but yours is certainly inspiring. Great tip on the directional fabrics - I will try to remember that when I am looking for a deal on a suitable fabric :).

Perfect Review. I have this in a heavy black wool that was made in 1993 and it still looks fabulous. I wear mine the same way you do, with one lapel tucked onto the opposite shoulder. I also made one in a Periwinkle coloured polar fleece. I adore the colour and it is sooo cosy to wear, but my daughter calls it "the purple people eater" because I look like a large plum in it. The fleece is not drapey enough for the style, although the same daughter looks fabulous in it. When I was cutting it out, I forgot to add the extra piece for the length, so it is shorter than the black one, maybe that adds to the plum effect. I have seen it made in a light jersey fabric too, which looked spectacular. Hmmm ... Seeing this review makes me think I would like to make it again. Now, what have I got in the stash that might work?

Thanks for you suggestions on useing fuzzy and/or a stripe or plaid. I have a piece of drapey mohair blend in a subtle plaid that I now need to consider as a possibility for this pattern.

Good review. I have made this coat and love it. I made mine out of a black, heavy wool coating bought at CyRudnick's while in K.C. I agree, the pattern is not difficult, but you must pay attention to the directions and think things thru as it is quite different from the pieces of a "normal" garment. I get comments on it practically everytime I wear it. I expect to be wearing it for years, and yes, it is tricky to hang up correctly.

Great review! Your sense of humor comes through and there's lots of good solid information. I've had this pattern for a LONG time - been afraid to tackle it. But I'm anxious to get started now.

Extremely helpful. It answered all my questions as I am about to begin this coat for a young friend. I've had the pattern for a number of years and am delighted to have a reason to make it up.

I HAVE LOVED THIS PATTERN SINCE I FIRST SAW IT, AND I FINALLY BOUGHT A COPY. I HAVE THIS SUSPICION THAT VOGUE IS GOING TO DISCONTINUE IT (THIS IS NOT AUTHORATIVE BY ANY MEANS, JUST A FEELING I HAVE). THE DESIGN IS SO UNUSUAL THAT I NEED SOME SENSE OF WHAT IT'S LIKE TO SEW--AND FUZZY'S DESCRIPTION IS PERFECT--VERY HELPFUL DISCUSSION OF WHAT TYPE OF FABRIC TO BUY. THANK YOU!
