Cathy Loves Fabric said... No, throw the fabric away and get something decent to work with so you won't be so frustrated. I think the top will work with a more stable knit from this decade. Lovely picture of your lovely self, lol. 3/14/06 1:10 AM

I have done some copies of RTW that were dismal failures, I have ripped out more seams and necklines than I care to admit. I had a similar experience with knit fabric growing on a top I made. A few suggestions that have helped me--using a nice stretchy foldover decorative elastic bindng really helps pull back a stretched out armhole and neckline. Also adding a sleeve that is reinforced with clear elastic tape on the seam might not look bad. My knit failures have been used for a variety of purposes. One that I finished is a comfy night shirt. The other two hopeless tops are now mops that I swish around with my foot to shine up the floors! But I really have gotten better with knits. The first thing I do on all my knit tops is a double stay stitch at the neckline and armhole. Try slinky or cotton lycra, they are very flattering and I think give good results. 3/14/06 1:18 AM

My first knits were stretch velvet, cause discount fabric in the mission always had tons, and the fit was forgiving of my lack of FBA knowingness.
I think the neck looks different, in a good way, the armhole you can sew up more. And shrink it to a faretheewell as per Debbies suggestion.
Knits that don't snap back anger the Knit Gods. They have been cast out of Knit Heaven. 3/14/06 9:10 AM

candyo said... Yep, I say blame the fabric too. I have problem with knits too, mostly involving necklnes and hems that stretch out of shape. Wish I knew why- if I find out I'll let you know. Funny review, though... 3/17/06 10:01 PM
Lisa Laree said... For this pattern to work for me, I have to pull the front armsceye in a bit with clear elastic, and I cut the mock-T a little shorter around (1/2"?") and made it 3/4" taller. But once it's 'fixed', it's a great pattern. And I don't remember any knits from the 70's that were truly worth sewing, but then I didn't have access to very high-quality stuff back then... ;) 10/14/06 9:39 AM
