These would also make nice gifts in "theme fabric" (cars; horses; sewing; whatever). I recently picked up a slightly different Simplicity apron pattern for that purpose.

I think aprons are very satisfying early sewing projects. They allow you to see how sewing seams (and they do seem to go on and on in aprons) really works out. You have a real life-size product at the end. Useful too, as your intentions for them indicate. Lovely fabric. Thanks for this.
