I sympathize with you about the end-result. I had good luck with a drapey double knit (non pocket version) and one disastorous looking dress with a slightly heavier knit, heavy knit does not skim over the tummy and it accentuates bad areas :-) so discarded that one.

I also made this dress, it came out beautifully ONLY it was WAY too big for me! I made a small (and I'm not that small either!) and it looked like a maternity dress. Too bad, too, as the pockets came out well, etc. So I tried to redo it by practically taking it all apart and resewing it and still didn't like it. I finally gave it away.
