Your coat is absolutely beautiful. I love the button detail on the back collar. Congratulations on a very beautiful coat.
11/19/07 7:12 PM
Your hard work really paid off. This coat is stunning.
11/19/07 7:25 PM
Gorgeous!! Tell me, though, why the fur trim is drafted to be only on the back hem of the coat... That part is tucked in when you sit.
11/19/07 7:26 PM
Re: Rhonda- Interesting- I am not really sure of the exact reason, if there is one, perhaps it was just the style at the time? Actually I have never seen a coat from the era with fur all the way around the hem, now I think of it. Best I figure (this is merely based on observation) is that the fur weighs the back hem down, making it flat like the front is, and forces all of the fullness to the sides. It is interesting. Before the fur was applied the coat hem was bell shaped and pretty stiff, but the extra weight did add a draping look that is quite nice. I would have done it anyway to imitate fashion plates of the period, and also to be true to the original fashion plate. In this case I took the traditional route you could say.

Wow! What a stunner. After that project, I think you can safely elevate yourself to Advanced. I loved all the detail in your review. Wear your coat with pride and elan. You deserve it.

Stunning!!! IF I had the skills (and the time, I admit) to ever tackle a thing like this, you wouldn´t have to be the only one running around like this. But alas...

Wow. This was a project of monumental proportions! Thanks for sharing all the details. The coat is awesome.

11/20/07 11:28 AM
HOLY COW I love your coat, and the review & instruction were fantastic. Alas, I would need more than absythine to attack such a project. YOU are my HERO!
11/20/07 11:47 AM
Wow thanks for all the great compliments guys! I honestly wasn't sure this coat would be so well received! Yes this project takes a lot of time, bleh. I started in early September this year. It was the project that would not die. Much of that time it was hanging on my dress form collecting dust because I got stuck on something and was avoiding it. Then I would feel guilty and be compelled to pick it up again. I can honestly say if I never have sew a coat again it will be too soon.
11/20/07 12:10 PM
Fleur, I have always admired that coat pattern your choice of fabric and buttons were fabulous. I have always dreamed on making that coat you have inspired me to do so. Hopefully soon you won't be alone in wearing such a vintage fashion. I will have to wait for the fabric fairy to send me the right fabric my way for this project. Once again great job.

Thanks for all the props, you are all too kind! If anyone needs specific detail shots, just let me know. I was thinking about adding some more pictures to help with construction, but I wasn't sure what to focus on.
11/30/07 1:57 PM
I'm really wowed by the caot and the courage it must have taken to "take it on" as a project. One question: Did you have any trouble getting all the thicknesses of the wool/lining at crossing seams under the foot of your homesewing machine? It seems like it might have required a commercial machine. Congratualations on the success of your coat!
11/30/07 2:28 PM
I second every compliment everyone has given you here! And please upgrade yourself to advanced immediately - or I'm going to have to call myself a beginner!!
11/30/07 4:21 PM
Absolutely stunning! This will be an heirloom of a vintage design created by a modern seamstress. Luv the review, great work you should be proud of yourself.
11/30/07 5:27 PM
Congratulations on a fantastic project! IT really helps to have detailed feedaback. You're definitely not the only weirdo out there who loves vintage... AS fo being a binner, forget it! Superb work. Go to the tp of the class! Brenda in Hong Kong
11/30/07 6:50 PM
I am speechless, wowed, may I kiss your scissors?? Fabulous coat: you must be sooo proud!! I adore everything vintage, would NEVER tackle this pattern, but am so grateful that you did, and then gave us such a wonderfully detailed and well-written review. Thank you! Thanks also for all the tips on fake fur; I do have some of that and will make SOMETHING eventually... :-} !
11/30/07 8:50 PM
You have a deep appreciation and understanding of clothing from this period and it shows! Now you need to get one of those straight flapper dresses, a cloche hat, looooong beads and low heels with straps!! My grandmother used to dress like this and owned a tavern so I've seen pictures of her dressed to the nines. Inspirational job on your coat!!!!
11/30/07 10:03 PM
OH! I just had a thought, why the fur is only on the back: maybe something to do with the awful cars they had to drive in the winter. I'm sure they were not heated inside--the fur would insulate your legs from the cold seat--and as thrifty as home sewers were, they probably shuddered at the expense of fur all around because it had to have been REAL fur!
11/30/07 10:09 PM
may i ask what machine you shoved those fat seams through? :) lovely coat, btw. real stunner.
11/30/07 11:45 PM
Holy cow! That is a coat!! You are amazing! I would love to see you with some dramatic makeup wearing that coat. I have never seen anything like it.
12/1/07 0:48 AM
A Wonderful coat, masterfully executed! Very informative (entertaining as well..) review. Thank you for sharing.
12/1/07 9:34 AM
Thanks guys I'm blushing, lol! As for the seams, yes that was... challenging. The wool seams, even with the pin tucked part adding bulk, did *technically* fit under the machine but it didn't move too easily without guidance. If I let it go at it's own pace the stitches would be super tiny because it was moving sooo slowly. This would definitely have been easier on a commercial machine rather than my consumer grade. Now sewing the fur through double layers of wool- well that was a bit harder. You need to give it a little more help (as in a good amount of shoving, heh) on those darted areas. Not ideal situation, but it got the job done. I reduced the tension a little bit too, that seemed to improve things a good deal. Oh, Celeste- that is really cool, I would not have thought of that. Sounds good to me!
12/1/07 10:06 AM
Wow, what a challenge and a stunning result. I have been sewing for more than 30 years and I have yet to tackle a coat. The length of your review is great, all the detail takes the fear out of doing a garment this difficult. Champagne !! Cheers !!
12/1/07 11:05 AM
There's nothing I can say that anyone else hasn't already said...but that is SOME COAT!!!! Congratulations!
12/1/07 12:36 PM
I am so impressed! For such a young lady, your skill is fantastic! That is a beautiful coat and even if no one else ever dresses in that fashion, everyone will be looking at you and wondering where you got such a great coat!

Thanks for posting this. I'm making this for a play and the *%#)*$^# collar has been confounding me!

Brilliant, I am just wondering whether I am a good enough sewer to make it-if so I will print this up and read it again thoroughly.
3/30/10 6:29 AM
Must... have... coat!
6/28/11 5:15 PM
I made this myself recently for Chicago the musical and I made it without the pin tuck detail since I rhinestoned the jacket and the detail would be lost on stage. 2 things I would say as well: The collar really takes a lot of finesse to get that thing in correctly. And the sleeves. Both women I made this for were quite slim and the sleeves were very tight. To correct this I had to enlarge the armscye and make adjustments to the ease. The best part was that not completing the pin tucks made very little difference in the finished product of this jacket-This is definately a jacket I will keep handy for those elegant moments in future shows I costume!

Hi again Fleur- I come back semiannually to marvel at your work and think, is this the time I will try my hand at this pattern? But this time I can't marvel, the links are broken. Any chance they could be fixed? The coat is such a beauty and the review is one I'm sure many of us come back to time and again!
