ITAdmin said... First of all, I really like your jacket, the style and the fabric. I think it looks good on you. Now for some unsolicited advice which you can take for what it's worth. Being the owner of a couple of big, long jackets like this, I've found that they seem to look good with slim skirts (long or short). Strangely enough, I've found the best pants are slim legged capris. If you look at Vogue 8006 (OOP) and Butterick 4297, you'll see the looks I mean. I agree that pants with any width don't look as good unless you're 6' 2". Just my two cents from someone who's dealt with the issue. 1/12/08 8:23 AM
fuzzygalore said... I second ITadmin wholeheartedly. These pants are way too wide, but the jacket is good. Don't go with the pipe cleaner though, there's a metal core to it, which will one day poke you in the neck in a near-fatal way :-), and potentially rust. Boning really is good, the braided nylon kind, it's enough, just use it. 1/12/08 12:51 PM

rivergum said... Yeah, you're right. I think I will make the slim skirt, the short version. I might try the capris as well. They are supposed to make your legs look shorter, but they can't do any worse than a skirt which stops at the same length. And they should be slimmer than even a pencil skirt.
Fuzzy, I'll get the boning. Wouldn't want to be stabbed by my own jacket :-) 1/12/08 2:40 PM
Birgitte said... What an excellent review! I really like this jacket and I appreciate your photoshop sacrifice:-) I agree with the above comments about a slim skirt, but I would also test the lines of a slim-over-the-hips and then a flare toward the bottom skirt, which may balance the 'drama' of this wonderful bohemian jacket. I'm a true bohemian at heart :-) 1/12/08 5:03 PM

Renata said... I posted a reply on the Fashion Trends thread before I got to this part. I like the coat on you. Go for it. I notice Spotlight has half price patterns from today, Sunday, I might have to have a closer look at the pattern. 1/13/08 3:47 AM
rivergum said... Sorry, WJean, I really can't tell about the size, it's just big. I don't think you would need any adjustments, as the fit is so loose. I would choose the size you normally wear and then take it in a bit if necessary. I'm a 38/40 depending on style, and I chose the 40/42 size, then took out 1.5 inches at each side seam which is 6 inches of the circumference. 1/13/08 1:42 PM

Irene said... I love your jacket, and I love it on you! This is a very helpful review, and I appreciate your illustrative extra photos. What you haven't shown us (and maybe haven't seen yourself?) is how your big jacket looks over skinny pants. I wouldn't wear completely visible skinny pants, either, but the jacket will only allow the lower portion of the pants to show. Another variation to try is wide or straight pants made from very drapey fabric. My Loes Hinse Oxfords pooch out in corduroy, but they look half as wide in crinkle rayon and navy blue raw wilk. 1/13/08 5:58 PM

Made them up in a almost purple rayon/cotton mix. Very cool and comfortable. Been meaning to leave off the bottom and make a pair of capris. Your jacket is lovely and reminds me of some of Kayla Kennington's work.

I must really like it, as I actually bought yet a second one later (can you tell I have a few patterns when I can't remember buying one the first time out?) I am a larger size than you are and an inch shorter and a bit older - so I have been absorbing your information and trying to work it up for myself. I really, truly, sincerely appreciated reading the details you have provided, as this is a fabulous style, but obviously the model is about 7 ft tall and a good bit thinner than I am! I am able to come closer to making a good first try by working with your experience. Again, I realize you must have taken a lot of time over your description, but it is extremely helpful to me. Thank you. 12/31/09 12:32 PM
