Irene said... Gigi, thanks so much for this review. I've always liked this style and have a dickens of a time finding it in RTW because current styles have the legs cut very high. When I was a teen, I was mortified at my mother's "old-lady" underwear (sort of a boxer style, in nylon) that she ordered from Sears. Little did I know that what I considered stylish would become "old-lady" underwear as I sought my favored styles in middle age! As always, your sewing is gorgeous, and you have me convinced to try sewing panties. Ann--my Stretch and Sew dealer carries tricot in about a dozen colors. It's 108" wide! 5/20/03 8:46 PM

I started making my own more than 10 years ago, when the RTW hipsters I liked were discontinued. I started with KS1380 (now OOP, I'm sure, but somewhat similar to this one), and used my RTW ones to adjust it. I find that they are most comfortable in a lightweight cotton/lycra, and I've made dozens of pairs. Learn to make your own undies and swimsuits and you'll always have something comfortable to cover your butt (or not cover it, if you prefer!) in whatever colour you choose!! 5/22/03 12:35 PM
Gigi Louis said... Tessa, I hope my review didn't offend you - it certainly wasn't intended that way. :-) Actually, the lower cut leg seems to be making a comeback - luckily when we sew we don't have to worry about what's in or out, we can have whatever we like!
Mary, I finally compared this pattern to the panty in Beautiful Lingerie. The back is nearly the same, but the leg in 2100 is cut lower in the front than the one in the book. The crotch is basically the same width, so I think it would need to be narrowed for most figures. I'm starting to think that the fuller one's inner thigh is, the more we might want to shave off. Stay tuned as I make this style in a very stretchy knit - from my comparisons I think I will have to go down 3 sizes but keep the elastic the same length for a nice smooth look. 5/22/03 3:48 PM

No, Gigi, I wasn't offended! But I can really relate to Irene's comment about her mother's underwear - if I had teenage daughters they'd probably think mine was as out-of-date as I thought my mother's was! I think I've been wearing this style now for about 30 years; they're comfy, I'm happy, and I can sew them in navy with red stripes if I like! 5/22/03 5:16 PM

This looks like it's a good bulk lace purchase resource, heck, at just $2.25 for 35 yards of narrow assorted lace one could have an almost never ending stash of it! 5/22/03 8:06 PM

I tried this pattern the other day and went down a size and reduced the crotch width by 1". How bizarre of Kwik Sew to have such a wide one?! The leg openings are low and I trimmed them the first time round. Next time, I'll trim off even more in the front. I also made the hipster and it almost came up as high as a brief. Makes you wonder how high the brief would go - you could probably attach it to your bra for an all-in-one! :) 11/20/03 10:31 AM
