I have made the vest version several times, and the kids' version of the top. I hadn't thought of adding a facing. It would make it look more finished.

Great thoughts. I have made 8 jackets with full length zippers and 6 of the childrens equivalent (KS 3537) from a Malden Mills seconds bolt. All who have received it loved it. Only change is the sleeve length which even for my monkey DH was almost too long. Has anyone else had this? I also sew the sleeve binding on with the sleeve flat. And I like the longer zippers. Two additions I make is a loop to the inside bottom of each sleeve in case someone wants to put a shell over. They hook in their thumb and the sleeve doesn't bunch up. Esp nice with younger kids. I also add a loop on inside CB so it can hang on a hook.

Great ideas, Juneberry! Hope you don't mind if I "borrow" them. This pattern is such a staple in my house that I could make it with my eyes closed! I haven't had to shorten the sleeves at all - 14 yo DS is 5'7" and DH is 6" (maybe they are just long-armed?).

Feel free to "borrow" the ideas. A friend who leads outdoor expeditions for youth to college age suggested the loop on the sleeve.
