The best mail order source (on the east coast, where I live) is, by far, Spandex House in NYC. They will send free swatches, and they're pretty good at matching color and pattern preferences if you can be specific about what you're looking for. Spandex House has been reviewed in the store reviews section of PR. Their prices are in the $8 yard range, and the selection is huge. 7/3/03 3:42 PM

This May, I was in a hurry to make sure my daughter had a suit for a field trip, and like a dufus went out looking for one. After two hours and lots of "too small, too big, too long, too short, too scratchy, too etc." we ended up at JoAnns buying swimsuit fabric. Just as you say, in less than the time it took to have a bad trying-on experience, we had a very nice suit, fully lined! For those who haven't tried making a suit, go for it! 7/4/03 2:48 AM

She loved the suit, but unfortunately, it was a holographic metallic fabric that didn't stand up to the chlorine very well. Dance fabric mislabled as swimsuit fabric. :( Your girls look great! 7/19/03 3:35 PM

I have now made 4 swim suits (2 of them worked out, one probably a wadder and one given to charity--too small) and it does get easier with each one. I think it's best to sew a two-piece, to overcome fitting problems that can occur with these negative ease patterns. I may try your lining tip--I have basted the lining to the fashion fabric, then sewn as one--an extra step. The pattern I've used asks for at least 75% stretch one way and 50% the other--I found that at least 75% stretch both ways is even better. In Kansas City, the fabric choices are limited and expensive. Online sources are probably better and I'll look into them. Thanks. 7/11/04 10:01 AM
