I tried on Sandra's sample, with the vertical zipper, and we had a talk about it - I am convinced that she is right and verticality is OK ;-). In fact my current favorite backpack has a bunch of vertical zippers and nothing ever fell out of it - stuff falls to the bottom of the bag, doesn't leap out sideways unless you're doing some unusual stuff indeed :-).

I've made this bag with a vertical zipper and found it difficult to get things into and out of the bag. I made it as a diaper bag to wear underneath my baby slings and wraps, and its smooth, cross-body styling makes it perfect for babywearing. I have been musing about making it again with a zipper across the top and leaving out the bulky lining - your review has clinched it.
