The term "Rash Guard" came from body surfers, kids that ride boogie boards and ride the wave all the way to the sand, wore them to protect their chests from getting rashes from the sand that washed up on the boards or when they washes all the way up onto the beach. Hence the term "Rash Guard" I think it started in Santa Cruz, CA the Surf capitol or Hawaii. They have evolved to all sports but are especially popular with all swimmers who spend all day in the sun and want protection. They can swim in them and get out and dry quickly. They are made out of nylon lycra, same as swimsuits. I would think they would be hot but then I've never worn one all I know my daughter loves them and I won't pay $40. to $80. for something I can make for $5.00 6/25/08 3:38 PM

They are the shirts football players wear under their pads and basketball players wear under their uniforms ect....Can also be worn as a insulating layer for skiers, ect.... It should really be called the all sport shirt!
My husband wears them for mtn. bike riding.
