Kathy, don't be discouraged! My first project in a sewing class were pull up pants and I hated them! I'm sewing now for nearly 10 years and I have failed quiet often and still do! Maybe start with an easy Kwik Sew patterns, they seem to have excellent instructions! And we are still out here to help you with every question you have!

Kathy, don't lose heart. My first project was an apron, it was horrid! Good for you for enrolling in the beginners class. And like Tini said, we are all here to answer questions.

Once you have a few classes, you will be able to tackle projects with confidence. Don't be shy about asking lots of questions :)

Please hang in there, Kathy. Sewing is a wonderful hobby. But it can be pretty daunting to get started without a knowledgeable sewing buddy by your side. The beginner classes should help you get going. Just keep in mind that not all instructors are created equal. If you still feel as though it doesn't make sense after your classes, don't blame yourself and don't give up on sewing. As others have suggested don't be shy and ask lots of questions here. Each sewing experience is a learning experience even if you have been sewing for 5, 10 or 30+ years.

Kathy - hang in there! I remember my first attempt at sewing. I cut out a jacket that was supposed to have the pattern piece layed on the fold. Well, I cut right up the fold! Looking back I should have started with a far more simple project! Take heart from your friends here on the PR and know we've all shared the same experience! You'll be on to fun projects in no time!

Good for you to try. Sometimes the way instructions are written just don't connect with you. The beginner class should help explain some of those basics. If you have access to Kwik-Sew patterns, you can try one of their beginner patterns. Once you get past those first initial confusions, you will be able to start guessing at what they REALLY meant to say in the instructions. Welcome aboard!

Kathy - don't be discouraged. This is a rewarding hobby and even though I've been sewing since I could hold a needle (literally) I still have the occasional project that goes straight from the machine to the wastebasket! More often than not however, I have very satifying results. So will you and your daughter!

Don't give up Kathy. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with this, but I think that you will find other, better written patterns, and hopefully you will discover the joys of sewing. And always ask for help! the message boards here at PR are very active and VERY helpful! -Ann

Kathy, I can't see the photo of your project, but the pattern shows a placemat with mietered corners or bias binding, and I think both views would be difficult for a first sewing project. (Do I have that right?) Please try again. You will be so glad you did not give up! I, too have been sewing for many years and I still drop complete projects in the trash occaionally. Like Ann said, the message boards here are so helpful.

Kathy, I'm a beginner too. One thing that I admire about you is that you TRIED! I was so nervous that I wouldn't be good at sewing that I never tried anything for 2 years! Well, my first sewing project was a purse and I laid the fabric wrong sides together and ended up sewing the purse backwards! I ended up throwing that away and since then I have messed up a pair of pants and a shirt. They are both in plastic bags hanging in my sewing area. But for all my mistakes, I have also created garments and purses that turned out well b/c I had the experience of my mistakes. YOU WILL BECOME THE SEWER YOU WANT TO BE!!

Kathy, I think Debe had it right when she said that the pattern had some challenging details in it. To attempt mitred corners without any sewing experience or a hand to hold takes a lot of courage! Good for you! And I think it's excellent that you signed up for a class. One more thing: I agree with aperiolat who said that the mistakes have been helpful in the long run. Perhaps we can think of them as practice? I definitely do!
