Lou. said... Thanks for the review. My two dogs love dressing up and get far too excited if they see a dog coat! I'm planning on making them a waterproof fleece for the winter. I need to buy the boots this year as well, the salt was horrible to them last year. 9/10/03 6:17 AM
Snowblossom said... OK you HAVE to post pictures when the final version is done. PS. I am not that well informed on the availability of dog clothing, but Dharma Trading Company http://www.dharmatrading.com has some cotton dog T-shirts (in different sizes) which are good for tie-dying. 9/12/03 12:17 PM

JDpenelope said... Candy HATES my project. She cowers when she sees me coming with the tape measurer. The trial version wasn't comfortable, so I cut a seam in it. Also, the fit wasn't so good (!) and I sewed in some darts and tucks. She's still unamused, when I try it on her, though. The hood needs to be longer and sleeker for a dachshund--it falls forward on her nose and she can't see out!
Your comments are helpful, especially the sites. (I have a lot to learn and relearn.) I did find another site for dog coats and harnesses--custom sewn--and ordered 4 things, very reasonably priced. I guess we are allowed to post links to commercial sites...petcollarsandmore.com. Will let you know about the items.
Trying to get organized and learn how to do the pictures! I'm also shopping for a serger, hopefully for less than $500, which apparently would make things easier.
I'm going to make a test of View A next, on some old knit fabric on hand. Not ready to ruin my new fabric yet. 9/13/03 7:26 AM
JDpenelope said... OK. I'm a little obsessed. To clarify a comment regarding the hood needing to be longer and sleeker, but falling on Candy's nose. Sounds contradictory. I intend to make a SEPARATE hood, covering the long neck and extending a little down the back. The hood on the pattern is sewn to the sweatshirt and doesn't fit at all...!!, thus falling onto the nose! 9/13/03 8:23 AM
JDpenelope said... I significantly updated my review. Thanks for the comments and web references. By the way, bought a Bernina 800 DL serger on a super sale - $599. So much to learn, so little time. 9/21/03 7:32 PM
AnneM said... Congrats on the serger. Very cute! I grew up w/ a 1/2 dachsund & 1/2 pomeranian dog; Candy makes me think of him. :) This was pretty ambitious for just getting back into sewing, with all the adjustments required. 9/21/03 7:48 PM
Ruth C said... I make coats for greyhounds. I think it took me just as long to adapt patterns for their slim bodies, trim waists and needle noses. But it was worth it--my girls stay dry and warm all winter. I've started making coats for friend's grey's and realized the boys have a whole other set of problems--those belly bands often get pee'd on! 9/21/03 7:51 PM
JDpenelope said... Ruth C - You definitely have my respect! Greyhounds would have the OPPOSITE problem with their long legs. But they're such beautiful and gentle dogs. Regarding changes/problems with patterns for male dogs-- as I was making my coats, I realized how lucky I was not to have a little boy doxie! 9/21/03 8:09 PM

I kept thinking that I would love to make something like this for my dear sweet boy (100 lb. boxer/golden retriever) but I know he would lie down and never get up if I did! 9/22/03 8:32 AM

Susan Parker said... Penelope, Candy looks so cute in her rain gear! The jacket it fits her really nicely, too. I guess dogs have "fit issues" just like people. ha ha. Regarding Gigi's comment, I did enter a set of 4 socks and a tail warmer in the "whimsy" sock category in Knitter's Magazine sock contest several years ago. And no, I never did manage to wrangle either Kimo or Sabe to get them to "model" the garments. Obviously, Candy is a much better behaved critter than my two cat monsters. l:D 9/22/03 9:18 PM
