I used the clasps the mom purchased -- they are metal, two pieces which hook together.

Nice job! Yes, I know that velvet can be evil! I have found that hand basting it before hand works for me, but I am going to try the steam-a-seam next time. That sounds like a much more timely solution to the 'walking' fabric! Thanks for the review.
