I cannot wait to try this pattern (maybe today while I'm all inspired by your review!). Also, thanks for the detailed tips; they will be really helpful as I sew this. 10/6/03 11:01 AM

gabrielle said... So glad you made this dress, Gigi. The only thing I really liked from the pattern photo was the sleeves, but was keeping my fingers cossed that you would review it and give us the real scoop! It looks great, and can't wait to see the pic. 10/6/03 12:46 PM

Irene said... Gorgeous dress, Gigi. I agree with you about the pattern envelope photos. Fabric choices and fit on the models just don't inspire me, but yours is lovely. Could you give more detail about how you made the full bust adjustment? Did you (only) use a princess-line-type adjustment--or did you adjust the front wrap tucks, too? 10/6/03 7:21 PM
Debbie Spriggs said... That's really pretty! I love the gathers and the wrap-over neckline. Just beautiful. 10/6/03 8:23 PM
Gigi Louis said... Thank you all for your nice comments. :-) Sherril, I think it would look lovely on you - probably too revealing in the wrap style for school unless you sew the wrap shut. Or you could wear it over a cami or tank. Irene, I slashed the side front panel and added length and width (retaining the original length at the side seam). I then also added length to the front piece. I didn't add any width in the pleat area as I didn't need any there. I was simply altering to get the over-bust seam over *my* bust. BTW, DH *never* comments on *anything* and he noticed this dress immediately. Think I'll make another ASAP. :-) 10/6/03 9:02 PM
zoe said... Wow - really nice! I've never heard of Loes Hines. I checked out the site and I like a lot of what's there. The portofino dress has a style that appears to be a flattering type for most figures. It looks comfortable too. I'm hoping they ship to Canada - I'd like to try that one. Your dress looks beautiful! 10/6/03 9:59 PM

Gigi Louis said... Actually, jlg, less curvaceous figures would have absolutely no trouble keeping that wrap closed! :-) My dressform is pretty slender and I think it looks great on her. 10/7/03 7:27 AM

Skymom said... Gigi, your dress is stunning, and more than makes up for the pattern envelope with was a total disincentive for me. I really thought the dress looked kind of frumpy in the picture (even though the model is so attractive), but yours is gorgeous. I could probably use a pretty dress like this myself. By the way, if you look at the pattern picture, you'll see that the back godet seems to hang down there more than the front one, just as you described. Is it not cut like that? And can this dress be done in a knit? Wouldn't it look good in a soft jersey, with full-length sleeves and boots? 10/7/03 9:19 AM
Skymom said... OH, one more questions: Is there a zipper or does this pull on over the head? If so, does that mean the waistline is not very fitted? It doesn't look too full in your picture. 10/7/03 9:20 AM
Gigi Louis said... Skymom, I fully intend to make this in a nice matte jersey! No, the back godet doesn't hang down longer on mine, they are about even. The dress pulls on over the head, it's a little snug going over the bust. It skims my waist (if you can call what I have a waist), not snug but not oversized either. It stays pretty true to Loes' style: slim silhouette w/o a lot of ease. 10/7/03 11:02 AM
Gigi Louis said... I also wanted to add that any of you large busted ladies who ever wanted to make the Barcelona but were concerned about being overwhelmed with fabric, you can get a similar look with this pattern with much easier bust-fitting. Alternately, the Barcelona skirt would probably work with the Portofino bodice too. 10/7/03 11:05 AM

Gigi Louis said... Yes, that is pretty much how it goes. If you have FFRP it's illustrated there. Once the adjustment is made on the side panel, the front panel is lengthened to match it. I first tissue-fit the bodice, leaving the princess seam unpinned over the bust. I then measured the amount of gap between the two pieces to figure out how much additional width I required. 6/7/04 7:04 AM
