I have problems getting my serged seams right, but I AM a novice. The garments look great and expectant Mom should be thrilled. 11/11/03 8:04 PM

I need to make a gift for a Feb. baby and have been trying to decide what to make. This just might be it! Thanks for the nice review. 11/11/03 8:14 PM

I'm not sure how the one with no sleeves will work in a car seat, but these kinds of things are useful for strollers, cozy naps, etc. I've' found that KS infant sizes run true to the size of my kids, who are on the small side of average; if your friend has one of today's big and robust babies, the little bunting probably will be outgrown in a matter of weeks--but that's true of all 0-3 month clothes, I've found. Nonetheless, I like small clothes for newborns. Babies can really be swamped if there's too much room to grow, and then you can't see how cute they are. About the zippers: Who really knows? I've had the same kind of thing happen when sewing fleece, but then I see all these zipped fleece sleepers my kids have had, and the zippers are always perfect. I wonder if it has to do with the fabric feed on a home vs. industrial sewing machine. 11/12/03 7:37 AM
Diana Hilliard said... Nice work Nikki!! I had hand knit, lined buntings for my babies, and I really loved them. SUPER useful! With a lining these things are REALLY warm, but you lose the stretchy benefits of the fleece.
I wonder if the zipper thing (very slight, wouldn't have paid it any attention if you hadn't mentioned it) has to do with the direction that you sewed the seams?
I like to add a tab at the top, made of the nice soft fleece, so that the zipper doesn't actually reach/touch the tender skin under baby's chin.

I lengthened them the second time. The legs seemed short on view B too, I think I shortened the body and lengthened the legs. I'm afraid, although it looks cute, it was the first KwikSew baby pattern I found to be poorly sized. I don't remember having a big problem with the zipper, but I changed the pattern slightly so that the zipper was a bit shorter than the front seam, and then I wan't trying to serge the end of the zipper into the inseam. I'm pretty sure I started sewing the zipper at the neck, so that it would match there, where it shows. I also added a tab behind the zipper at the neck, not sure it was necessary. 11/13/03 2:26 PM
