I have sewed a couple of bags myself as first projects. I'm glad this worked out for you. Congratuluations!

I have to disagree with you that this is a bag that someone who has NEVER sewn could tackle on their own, never having read a pattern before. I took a class and this was my first project, and another girl and I both had difficulty understanding the pattern - keeping in mind we are absolute newbies to the sewing world, never having read a pattern or used a sewing machine before. Without the instructors help, we would have been stumped. Like you, we were also stumped about the fold at the bottom of the bag. I made the large bag, and my fabric was 60" rather than 45" and I had just enough leftover fabric to sneak in an extra interior pocket. I also wish the bag had a liner to give it a more finished look, but for a beginner this was a great start. In the future, I would use a sturdier fabric, like a lightweight canvas, so the bag isn't so floppy.
