oh my god! how do you do it? what a wonderful pant!!!

Gigi - Your pants are the best advertisement Palmer and Pletsch/McCalls could ask for. They look absolutely perfect. (Does Kwik Sew know you are two-timing them?)

Karla, the KS comment really made me laugh! Well, I am a PP certified pant fit instuctor (although I don't do it anymore) so I do like their patterns for their style and teaching value. But if you know your body it doesn't matter whose pattern you use. :-)

BTW, whenever you see the peach tile I am taking a photo in my bathroom mirror so the fly is reversed. :-)

Gigi, what wonderful pants - you are very talented. Want to come to the Midwest and help me do that

Well, guess I have to pull out the JoAnn's flyer and catch the next sale on McCall's Patterns. I want All the Palmer and Pletsch pants patterns. (Say that fast 5 X's) Thanks for bring these patterns to our attention! Had just about given up on McCall's. How do you feel about the non-P&P McCalls patterns?
4/23/02 9:07 AM
Rennie, sorry for jumping in but I feel that Gigi is such a great seamstress that it does not really matter what pattern she uses, in fact if you read her reviews, she always alters the patterns before sewing them up so I guess if the rest of us would do that also, we could also end up in perfect garments like her. Dont you agree?
4/23/02 10:14 AM
Yes, I do alter everything! However, some patterns are just badly drafted! The PP patterns have so much valuable fitting information in them, which is lacking in the regular line. Haven't used McCall's other pant patterns but have a few lined up so I will compare and let you know. They won't have the wider seam allowances and alteration markings that the PP ones have though. BTW, I wore these pants yesterday and everyone commented on how much weight I had lost - in reality I have gained 2 pounds in the last 2 weeks!

Those are great! You made me get my "Pants for Any Body" book out! Looking through it the best pants for my body are trousers. If I could get a pattern to fit, I would be thrilled. Is there a pattern you suggest for pleated pants? I made Sandra Betzina's last weekend. I cropped them - they look okay but are really too big and one pocket bulges!

Peggy, why don't you try McCalls 9233 View B. It's a nice classic trouser. It's really just a matter of taking the time to baste and adjust/readjust. I try on my pants about 10 times while sewing - sewing in your underwear facilitates the process.
4/23/02 1:49 PM
I'll try it! I read the underwear tip in the book last night. Thanks!

Deepika, I agree Gigi is talented enough to make a silk purse from a sow's ear but I think she's smart enough not to if she doesn't have to. If she recommends a pattern I feel it's a pattern worth her time and talent in her judgement. I know Gigi is not against paying 10 or 20 dollars for a good pattern but the fact I can get these for 99 cents doesn't hurt! I understand the big 3 or 4 add wearing ease, then design ease. The double ease explains why we have to buy these patterns by the high bust measurement and not the full bust and still the neckline can be huge. Maybe the P & P patterns are better drafted, at least the pants. We just need more reviews to see. Thanks for sharing your success with us Gigi. Oh and doesn't it seem unfair there is a reverse purportion ratio to how much we sew and how successful our weight management is?? I hate that.

So many compliments, I think my head may swell! ;-) You all are so nice. One thing I would like to point out is that the finished garment measurements are printed on the back of the PP pant pattern envelopes - I use that to help me determine what size I want to start with. It's good to know how much ease YOU prefer before selecting a size. I have a 39" hip and usually go with a 12 unless it's a very fitted pant. And yes, Rennie, I will surely lose 10 pounds as soon as I finish my 10 pairs of pants!

Gigi, I love this pant style. Iam considering purchasing this pattern and trying this style for myself. I have 40" hips and a very thick waist, (almost) straight. If I would alter the waistband to more of a "faced waistband", would this be appropriate for this style pant? With having No waist, I try to stay with faced waistbands when I can. Thank You for your input.

Debra, I think a narrow (1/2") band would probably work better for this pant due to the slanted pocket, which may gape at the top if there was a facing.
5/18/02 1:12 PM
Gigi, Yes your right, I didnt think about the slant on the pockets. Thank You for you input. Our Joan's ad starts McCalls patterns today for .99 cents and I am going to get the pattern. Thank You.

I am so glad to finally here someone actually say that a pattern has to be altered to fit. I thought your review of this pattern was excellent. Pants are a pain to fit but worth the trouble. I dislike spending an entire day at the mall trying on every pair of pants known to man to finally find a couple of pair that fit "ok". Some patterns are a part of the problem, but I think the biggest problem is that most of us sewing really don't know what we're doing when it comes to fitting a pattern to our bodies. I recently invested in the Marta Alto and Pati Palmer fitting book and it's the best money I've spent in a long time for sewing. I am finally understanding just what those fitting issues are and how they can be fixed. Two thumbs up, Gigi! You are definitely an inspiration!
5/23/02 1:07 AM
Thank you Susan! The time spent learning to fit pants (or anything for that matter) is well worth it. A day spent in the sewing room can easily result in a perfect pair of pants - a day at the mall is just depressing. :-) The PP fitting book is my absolute favorite, I can't wait until their new pant book comes out.

exactly what i want. looks like you have the same alterations as me. thank you very much

I love denim. The pant looks great and the also the fit.
9/1/02 0:06 AM
I'm in the process of making the alterations on this pattern. Thanks so much for your helpful comments - you've inspired me to finish asap so I can have a great looking pair of pants too. I'm starting with the shorts (for the HOT aussie summer)!
