| Pattern Description: Vest with closure and collar variations. Princess seams front and back. Back ties and buckle. I made version E, one button closure.
Pattern Sizing:NL sizes 4-16. I made my standard size 12, with very little tweaking. Here's a back view and a picture of the vest flat.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Absolutely. This pattern has cat approval.
Were the instructions easy to follow?Very easy. Since I sew mostly from BWOF, I've gotten out of the habit of really reading instructions, but when I glanced at these I was really pleasantly surprised at how clear they were. I liked that they pointed things out like easing the top of the joining seam between the two front pieces; it's a small thing, but an important one, and if BWOF remembered to mention it, it would have been so deep in the maze I would never have found it.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I had fabric issues. Boy, did I have fabric issues. The main one was that I only had 3/4 yard of fabric, and I wanted to make something that showed off the fabulousness of my fabric. But I didn't want to make a bag because if this fabric ever got dirty, I'd have to hurt something. A vest was the obvious choice, and when I saw this pattern, I thought it would be perfect.
Then I saw the pattern (version E) on Kisha last week, and knew what one I wanted. She agreed that if I cut carefully (and probably cut the under-collar from lining fabric), I would have enough. And I did.
Fabric Used:Embroidered velvet by Versace, purchased at the Patternreview get-together last June in A Fabric Place in Baltimore. This fabric purchase was traumatic; it was the most expensive fabric I had ever touched, much less purchased. Because of the price, I only got 3/4 of a yard. (Yes, I know, what could I do with 3/4 of a yard? I had no idea, I just knew I had to have it, and I also knew I couldn't spend one more penny on it than I did). So it sat for a while until this pattern came around, but it was never intended just to be stash - this was too good NOT to use.
Rust-colored textured lining fabric. Vintage button and buckle. I used no interfacing at all in this project (other than the back ties), though they do recommend interfacing the collar. I decided not to because my fabric was pretty substantial (velvet, underlayer and backing fabric) and I didn't want it to get too thick. It was the right decision for this fabric, the collar doesn't look like it's lacking interfacing at all.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:Very minimal for me. I think I was so afraid of messing up my fabric that I stuck to the straight and narrow here and ended up with exactly the vest I started out sewing. Sometimes my end result is very far from my beginning because I re-think midstream. I didn't do that here. My only change was to use a snap for the closure and sew my vintage button on top. Once again, not risking the velvet trying to buttonhole it. Besides, it's a ginormous button.
I wavered on inserting the back belt, but I did have one gold buckle in stash and it seemed a shame not to use it. Because the buckle is a little heavier than a standard vest buckle, I pulled the ties a little tighter and hand-stitched them from the underside so they don't sag.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?I'm definitely going to make this again - there are a few other variations to try out, and I do have one other fabric in the stash that's been waiting for a project like this - it's pale yellow satin with Eiffel Towers and pink poodles on it, don't ask. But with pink piping? Yeah, there's another vest coming.
Conclusion: I think New Look patterns are very under-rated. They have cute styles, they're well drafted, and every one I've ever tried has given me a consistently good result. And they're not expensive at all, so that's an even better excuse to try out something new.
