I chose to use this easy pattern to build confidence after a Vogue Shift Dress is looking like a wadder after two muslins. And after seeing all the great work from Advanced Beginners, I'm changing my rating to Beginner (in garment making)! My confidence was low so I chose this pattern - but it was a bit too easy - I like a bit more tailoring than elastic waistband. It took less than 2 hours start to finish and that includes a serging overlock stitches.
Pattern Description:
These skirt patterns are very easy to sew and have special, easy-to-follow sewing instructions. The skirts have elastic in a casing at the waist and can be made in three different lengths.
Pattern Sizing:
S - M - L - XL. I made a medium and enlarged the waist band to a large - but this pattern has alot of ease and even though I measured - I think a straight medium would have been better. I'm strawberry/inverted triangle with a straight waist and just a bit bigger hips. Pants/skirts are traditionally a lot easier for me than bodices.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes. Sadly. Not that fashionable but with the stretch denim (very soft from Joanne's) very comfortable.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Extremely.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Pattern isn't tailored enough but I wanted an easy pattern and it turned out exactly like the envelope!
Fabric Used:
Soft stretch denim.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
I used a serge/overlock stitch my machine has and made the hem like a pair of jeans. Decorative stitches or topstitching would have been a great detail but I was thinking - it's a comfortable simple skirt -it is what it is. I was tempted to sew in side pockets. In addition, because I wanted to finish - I did a straight hem but could have lengthened it in the back by .25 or .5 inches now that I look at the pictures . . .
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I don't know if I would sew it again - but yes, maybe in a longer length. I would but with the idea this is a beginner pattern that should probably be the first or second garment you sew.
Conclusion:
Fun, easy pattern. It is what it is!

jilly cooper 10/5/09hey from one beginner to another - I know what it is like to NEED simple patterns to build confidence:) I tried a KS365 OOP, 4 gore skirt. It was my first ever knit skirt. On the packet it looks like a woven gore skirt so I thought I would give it a go but I was nervous that a knit on me would cling and show all the bumps. Anyway this skirt was super easy, 4 pieces, stitch/serge 4 seams, I put on swimsuit elastic around the waist and OMG it hung beautifully, looked like a tailored skirt in the way that it sat on the waist and hip then flowed beautifully to the bottom. There is hope that simple, knit, elastic waist skirts can deliver stunning results. PS: I won't upload a photo coz I am way too shy for that.

pammieh 10/5/09Thanks Jilly for the tip - I'll check it out!! I almost didn't post because of the simplicity but am trying to get into a sewing rhythm. I will check out KW 365. My next patterns are going to be TNT patterns Simplicity 2603 (cardi wrap) and the KW Yoga Pant. I've got orders from a brother and J. for some easy male projects too! Lastly, I'm trying to make two Elvis costumes for Halloween - that will be good practice! Thanks for the post!!

marec 10/5/09That is one cute skirt. The denim color and the length are perfect for each other. Wouldn't this be a great skirt for applique or patch pockets? Keep sewing and don't compare yourself to others. Just enjoy!

kidmd 10/5/09I think it's cute! My favorite skirts are the basic elastic waist or wrap styles. I wear them all the time.

pammieh 10/5/09Thanks!! Marec - great comment - in fact, I have some eco-conscience large patches that could be used as pockets - I'm tempted to use them (they have messages like, "live green").........as pockets. . .

jilly cooper 10/5/09pammieh - whoa - you are going to be busy. Can't wait to see the yoga pant review, I am super keen to see how that turns out. Good luck with the Halloween costumes:)

pammieh 10/5/09Thanks Jilly! I have NO idea how I am going to make the Elvis Costumes (though I do have the pattern!). That is way above my skill level but hey, it's Halloween, right - doesn't have to be perfect:)
