| Pattern Description:
This pattern is for a men's fleece jacket and vest. I made the jacket.
Pattern Sizing:
The recipient measures a medium, but when I have made him medium sized jackets in Kwik Sew before he has swum in them. So this time I went down a size and made a small. The jacket turned out fitted, but the fabric has very good stretch and the fit was correct for the planned use of the jacket.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Somehow I found fabric that matched the color of the illustration jacket, so it looks exactly like the drawing on the pattern.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
As always the Kwik Sew directions are straightforward and easy to follow. Because this is a fleece pattern there are no fancy edge finishes. This would be a great first jacket pattern.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked that the pattern was straight forward and easy to put together.
When I had a problem, let's call it a combination of not enough coffee and no calculator, I contacted the company by email. they answered quickly and not once did they call me a stupid twit, they just politely showed me my math error.
Fabric Used:
I found Malden Mill's Power Stretch at my local mill ends store. No one there seemed to know what it was so I got the entire roll at a very good price.
For the bottom and sleeves I used the recommended swim suit binding. the stretch of the binding pulls the sleeves and bottom in towards the wearing, eliminating drafts. I had purchased some of the Wright's fleece binding, but I found it had no stretch at all and was not right for this pattern. Also I didn't like the feel of the binding when I got it out of the packet, I found the fabric stiff and rough. Disappointing stuff.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
I added four inches to the body of the jacket. And one inch to the arms. The recipient plans to wear this jacket while riding his motorcycle and the extra length is so his back and wrists stay covered in the bent forward position. He plans to wear a safety vest over the jacket.
I am never happy with the final look of the Kwik Sew zippers. they work fine, and they are easy to put in, I just don't like that raw edge look. So I always stitch a ribbon over that raw edge. You can see that Here. This gives another design detail. It's also a good place to put your 'created by' labels. Another idea is to embroider a design or the recipient's name on some grosgrain ribbon and use that to cover the raw edge.
This time I was lucky to have some flame ribbon I bought from a now defunct ebay seller. I think it is a good match.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes I would sew it again. And I am reviewing it here so I can recommend it to others.
Conclusion:
This proved to be a fast project, 24 hours from start to finish. The jacket fit perfectly and the new owner was thrilled, which may account for that weird look on his face.

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | sewtime | 10/8/09 | Nice looking jacket!!! | | * * * | | mhk3boys | 10/8/09 | I really like your jacket and the flames ribbon is so cool, what a great idea! | | * * * | | Renren | 10/8/09 | What a great review! I loved all the detail you gave about not having to finish the edges of fleece fabric, about this being a good first jacket pattern, about how you finished the zipper tape edges with the ribbon (love that blue flame ribbon), and how well Kwik Sew responded to your problem. I'm glad the recipient is happy with his jacket and my guess is he is probably more at ease on his motorcycle than modeling his great jacket for the camera eye!!! Lucky guy! You've done a great job. | | * * * | | AnitaJ | 10/9/09 | Very nice jacket! I really like how you finished the raw edge of the zipper tape - I'm going to have to remember to try that. :) | | * * * | | calminatrix | 10/9/09 | great looking jacket and the "recipient" is adorable! | | * * * | | sarahb | 10/9/09 | Love it.
