| Pattern Description: Cowgirl Costume for my 7 yo granddaughter
Pattern Sizing: Size A, Childrens 3,4,5,6,7,8
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Basic Shape yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? very
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? It was a very basic pattern, easy to understand
Fabric Used: All fabrics from my stash, including fake pony fur that my mother made for me when I was younger, black ultrasuede remnants, pink ultrasuede remnants, and dusty pink lining fabric . The black fringe was the only thing recently purchased from a store that was moving, I got over 10 yards for 80% off reg price.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Basically the shape was a vest and skirt. My granddaughter had wanted me to make her costume like the picture shown next to my costume. I added gauntlets, boots, scarf and a hatband to complete the outfit. Cowgirl costume
The pony faux fur fabric was a couple leftover remnants, maybe just under a yard total. It was leftovers from my mom's stash from an outfit she made for me years ago. I took the fur and had enough for the front, and just place the vest fronts and skirt backs, the best way possible - not worrying about pile direction. The vest back was black ultrasuede because I did not have enough fur. I had pink ultrasuede pieces which I cut into lengths and fringed it - very easy. I used some black and gold trim over the fringe on top to give it a little more pizzaz. The skirt has 3 lavers of fringe and the vest 2 layers. Both the vest and skirt are lined with a dusty pink lining.
The gauntlets were more pink ultrasuede with pink fringe and the black/gold trim. Since the ultrasuede was a little stretchy, I just sewed up the sides so it could be pulled on.
Sewed a length of black and pink fringe together w/ the gold trim, and velcroed the back so it could be used on the cowboy hat as a trim.
Made a v-shaped scarf from a leftover pink/white check that I had from a tablecloth to use as a scarf.
Finally, made pull on boot/chaps. Added the black fringe and covered the top with pink ultrasuede strips that I zigzaged over with black thread. Gathered in the ankle part with elastic and sewed up the back. boots/chaps
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Would recommend, it was a good project to embellish
Conclusion: Since it was for the granddaughter out of town, I erred on the side of making it too big. When the package arrived and she tried it on, the skirt was falling down her hips, and the band was too big. Told my son how he could fix it..just a seam up the back would do, and he actually took a couple stitches on each side. Made the boot/chaps since they live in Florida and my son could not see buying boots for something she wouldn't wear again. So, he took a pair of her old shoes, sprayed them black, put the boot/chaps over and it looked great. Just saw them right before they went trick or treating today and everyone was happy.
It was definitely fun, and I got a chance to get creative.
