| I think I have fixed the link to the large view of the correct costume... Sorry about that!
Pattern Description:
This pattern includes two versions of a Civil War costume uniform jacket (long and short) and a pair of pants. I made the long version of the jacket only.
Pattern Sizing:
Regular - I made a size large.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Well, no, but I didn't intend for it to look like that!
Were the instructions easy to follow?
For the top part of the jacket - yes. The 'skirt' part and the pleating - no. I laid it out on the floor and figured out what I needed to do - the pattern was more confusing than most.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I am pleased with the end result but the instructions were confusing. I had done lined garments and pleats before, but not pleats in a lined garment. I wasn't really sure if I was following the written instructions correctly and the pictures didn't really help much. Obviously it all worked out but it was not easy.
Fabric Used: We used a wool-blend suiting.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Well, as you can see, we were going more for a steampunk inspired "airship pirate" - not a Civil War soldier. This was my husband's Halloween costume so his wishes guided most of the changes. We only did the buttons on one side for a more rakish look, and added buttons at the collar/other embellishments to make the costume unique.
Other than that I think I stayed pretty true to the pattern.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I need a mental health break first... this costume had me a little stressed out! Unfortunately dear husband decided on a costume 7 days before Halloween, so what you see is the product of only a week's work (amid other commitments, no less!) I would only recommend this pattern to sewers with experience doing more complex garments as it is a little more demanding than average. It would be easy to get discouraged if you were a less experienced sewer.
Conclusion:
I can't complain about the end result - it looked very nice and fit well (with more time, I would have tailored it more, I think) and I'm sure he'll wear it often for Halloween and conventions.

I think it's fixed now - thanks for the comments! | | * * * | | shanntarra | 11/5/09 | I wanted to say that I agree with you. If I had not done an actual men's pleated suit coat before the skirt part would have drove me bonkers. I comend you on doing this in a week with other comitments. It took me a good 10-12 hours to make mine! | | * * * | | neverwinter2 | 11/11/09 | Thanks Shantarra - I was glad I had your review to read before I started!
It was one hectic week with a lot of sewing, for sure. ;-) | | * * * | |
