| Pattern Description:
I made a one-piece, button-up, hooded costume for Halloween. My son wanted to be Max from the book Where The Wild Things Are. I wanted to make something warm, true-to-the-source, and sturdy.
Pattern Sizing:
I made a child's size 6.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
My standard was the book's illustrations, and I think it came off beautifully!
Were the instructions easy to follow?
If you've made a basic baby bunting, you can make this. I drafted, cut and sewed a lining (with facings at the sleeve and leg hems, as well as front placket) and a shell. I left part of one lining side-seam open. I then created the hood and hood lining and basted the neck edges together. I then pinned the hood to the shell and basted in place, then attached the lining and shell along the front edges and the sleeve and leg hems (both lining and shell being inside out), then turned right-side out and hand-finished the side seam in the lining. I really like this method of construction.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like everything about how this turned out! I made it built to last so my son could wear it as much as he wanted. I've loved the compliments I've received and I hope to inspire more people to sew creatively!
Fabric used:
The shell is made from a terry cloth from Joann's that I overdyed subtly to take out the bright-white. The body is lined with an ivory Bemberg rayon, and the pocket bags and hood lining are a yellow hatched quilting cotton from my LQS.
The whiskers are made from cable ties which are sturdily sewn into the hood. The ears were interfaced but needed additional stand-up powers which my husband provided using curved plastic inserts cut to size (from a CD spindle case).
The tail was made with a faux fur that is surprisingly pretty.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Since this is a self-drafted pattern, I basically took patterns from a raglan-sleeved top, a pair of pants, and a hat pattern I'd enjoyed using before (with four sections to make ear insertion easier) and then franken-patterned the whole thing a few times. It's a bit long in the torso for a perfect fit, but my son grows so fast I was afraid not to give him a lot of extra room.
For the hat / hood I slashed into two of the triangular sections to give the ears an "angle" and handsewed the ears in.
I added some side pockets as well.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
My kids have always loved my many costumes I've made them; I'll continue to do so for as long as they like them!
Conclusion:
Happy Halloween!
