| Pattern Description:
Close-fitting trousers/pants with straight, wide legs and zipper fastening/closure in the left side seam.
Pattern Sizing:
Women's sizes: 36 38 40 42 44 46 48
Equivalent to approx 10 - 22 US pattern size.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Well, within the given parameters anyway. I'm not 6'6 and skinny, so it was never going to look exactly like the model. Line drawings. Front view. Back view
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes and no. They were a bit lacking IMHO and I used Ottobre Woman for the zip insertion and A photo tutorial to do the waist facing. If I had been making these as my first pair of trousers, they would probably have turned out OK, though.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
A simple wide (straight) legged trouser pattern with waist darts, a side zip, and no waistband. In theory, this should give a smooth line and be flattering to those of us who can look like a water-balloon wrapped in elastic when we wear trousers with a waistband.
I didn't like the instructions for inserting the zipper - basically the same as for a lapped dress or blouse zipper - and stopped looking at the instructions after that so I've no idea if the facing instructions were any good or not.
Fabric Used:
Oh jeez. This is a black poly-something woven with a bit of texture. My camera won't photograph it well, and it looks shiny in the flash photographs which it definitely isn't. It frays. A lot!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
No design changes. I made view C which is the full-length trousers but I didn't line them as I wasn't working with a sheer.
Alterations: now let me see. Pictorial history here.
1. Sewed everything with 1cm instead of 1.5cm seam allowances to get the extra circumference I need (I'm basically a 50, not a 48).
2. Mucked about with the crotch to try and get it to fit better around the rear.
3. Added 4cm at hip level, and curved the front waist down to match mine. As a result, I didn't bother to sew the front darts - there wasn't more than 3cm left.
4. Added 1cm at the back crotch point to reduce the pulling under the bum. Still not totally happy with that but I have a possible solution courtesy of Debbie Cook.
5. Shortened the legs by 7cm below the knee - yes, I know you're not supposed to do that, but my knee matched the knee marking on the pattern and they were far too long.
6. Changed the side zip to be more of a side fly by adding a shield to protect my skin from the zip, followed the faced fly picture tutorial (with much headscratching), and added a button with diagonal buttonhole on the fly shield to hold it all together.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, I will probably sew these again, but only after a little more alteration. I think they are a good basic pattern, but a little lacking in instruction.
Conclusion:
I'm learning. Fitting trousers is still a !$%@#*& but I'm getting there.
