| Pattern Description:
Khaliah Ali Wardrobe including dress, waistcoat, blouse, pants and skirt. I made the princess seamed vest only.
Back view
This waistcoat was made as part of my Morris dancing kit (costume). When this side started in 2002 we had to create our own kit. This was achieved by a whole lot of non-sewers blustering around but the result was surprisingly wearable. Many years and a baby later I decided to remake my old, faded, badly made, ill fitting and too small waistcoat. The aim was to remake the entire costume for the Great Victorian Ale (a weekend festival), but I ended up only getting the waistcoat done. I chose this pattern because it was a suitable style and I intended to make the blouse in black voile as part of the outfit too.
This is what out our kit looks like all together: May Day 2006 May Day 2007
Pattern Sizing:
10-18 and 20W-28W.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
They were not up to Simplicity's usual standards. I made errors that I don't usually because about 6 separate processes are listed under one step. Maybe to save space as it's a wardrobe pattern? Go slowly and follow VERY carefully.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the princess seaming, the V-neck and the points at the front. I particularly like the longer line, finishing at the hip not the waist.
Fabric Used:
Cheap fire engine red cotton poplin courtesy of the Brandragon bolt. I lined it with 100% silk. Finding a way of making these waistcoats suitable for dancing in in the heat of Australian summer without roasting is an eternal problem. Some people have lined with cotton, but I really wanted something slippery (more comfortable for dancing) so I splurged on AU$22/m silk from Rathdowne fabrics.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
The pattern has you use the entire centre front pieces, interfaced as a facing, ie on the inside, there would be interaced fashion fabric right up to the princess seam. I made this piece out of lining fabric instead (so you'll need to change the fabric amounts if you want to do this). I interfaced the front edge of the fashion fabric instead.
I used a size 16 with a FBA and a little extra length at the waist. Alterations
I also got a friend to adjust and repin the princess seam (black texta in the picture) as my only other princess seams were awful - this was much better. I freaked out that it would be too small in the back so I cut the back pieces a little away from the fold. It turns out I didn't need it.
There seems to be more room over the tummy than I need. Not sure how it got there. Overall I am happy with the fit - there needs to be a fair amount of ease for comfortable dancing.
I also added a ribbon trim around the edges and our dragon on to the back. I left off the back ties.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Waistcoats as fashion wear is not really my thing as I don't work in an office, so probably not. Also the pants and skirt in this packet are not in my size range =( I might get around the the blouse some day. I would recommend this pattern though.
Conclusion:
Nice, flattering waistcoat pattern.

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | FreyaStark | 11/8/09 | Morris dancing! Well, I never ... (I love the shoes!) Couldn't you use another vest in a snazzy fabric like a tartan cut on the cross or an embroidered Chinese satin to wear with a long-sleeved T or blouse in spring and autumn? | | * * * | | Renren | 11/8/09 | The surprising things we learn about the lives of our PRers. Fabulous looking dance team and I love the vest. I have a little dragon-loving friend to whom I will show the picture . . . she draws dragons, really nice dragons, dragons nice enough to win at the high school state art competitions, and I will be showing her your dragon. Did you buy that black-circled dragon and iron it on or is it something you have fabricated yourself? Very nice. | | * * * | | ClaireEmily | 11/8/09 | Freya - when it cools down enough to wear it I might drag this pattern out again. It would certainly be a quick and satisfying sew now!
Renren - glad to hear about your dragon loving friend! The dragon on the back was designed by a member of our side. We then had them screen printed onto the same red fabric so that we could all have one. All I did was sew the screen print on. There is a tradition of embroidering/decorating the dragons - my last waistcoat was embroidered with metallic thread and glass beads. One day I will get around to decorating this one! | | * * * | | Oceanpeg | 11/9/09 | This pattern might be great for Tartan fabrics like the ones I have in my stash. Added this pattern to my wish list and might get one to make up a Tartan vest with it. Thanks for the idea FreyaStark. | | * * * | |
