I did change the ties a few minutes ago and it does look better - shows more waist and it feels better, less restricted. Funny thing is that when you told me it looks fine as it is I felt confident enough to change it Thanks for your help!
Pattern Sizing:
6-810
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Basically, yes.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Very much so. American instructions are extremely detailed which is sometimes a bit confusing for me
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
This pattern was sitting in my stash since I started sewing a year ago because I loved those simple and strict lines of the jacket with its mao collar. It is a very easy pattern and that was just what I needed for this project.
I found nothing to dislike.
Fabric Used:
It is called Wolltuch in German. The fabric is made of woven wool and is very slightly felted, it is very soft and although not thin it is drapey.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
So I had this fabric in dark dark blue which would exactly match the colour of my little blue skirt (and some trousers I should review). And I wanted a jacket to go with both. I was thinking about making a Caban (which is called a pea-coat, I guess? Those double breasted sailor jackets?) but I was reluctant as all the RTW Cabans I tried on were not right for me - too big, too large, not "delicate" enough. I did not want to waste this fabric on a style that might not suit me.
Again and again I took out this pattern but found it missed something. A belt perhaps and some inches for covering a bit more hip. Than I saw emr review and was amazed: very beautiful and actually what I had in mind although my picture was foggy I could add those ties to the jacket make it longer and would have what I wanted. Plus: no buttons which I still fear.
Unfortunately I made a stupid mistake and I might change it today - if I can bring myself to ripping seams apart that were made with the perfect thread - I cannot see it anymore ... so what would you say: keep it or change it? What the mistake is? The ties are set in about an inch too high, the start under the bust and end in my waist and it would have been more flattering if the middle of those wraps were in my waist.
So, here are the pictures although they don't do justice to the jacket because it does look nicer on me in RL. Click Here and here for details on my ties and here for one from head to toe and a last one feeling strong. Well, those pictures aren't great and the jacket doesn't sit as good as it does when just walking around - taking pictures with a timer and a cat ... you know what I mean
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I think that there are many changes possible and I might make another variation one day.
Conclusion:
I still love this pattern and if you can get one you should and start playing around with it.

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | BillieJean | 11/24/09 | It looks beautiful and I say unless you're not comfortable with the ties as they are, leave them alone. No one else knows they aren't exactly where the pattern said put them. Call it a design change. | | * * * | | Rebecca D | 11/24/09 | I agree with Billie Jean - leave the ties as is unless you're uncomfortable wearing it. | | * * * | | thirteenstitches | 11/24/09 | Lovely jacket. Also a very nice job for a beginner : ) Looks great on you too! | | * * * | | moushka | 11/24/09 | Beautiful jacket. It looks very chic just as it is. If the thread matches perfectly, you'll drive yourself crazy trying to pick it out. You can reposition the ties on your next one. Can't believe you're a beginner :) | | * * * | | lamstu | 11/24/09 | Your jacket looks great. I agree with the others that the ties are just fine; I like the way they drape and add a bit of definition. (Just think, you'll probably never make that mistake again :)) | | * * * | | digs57 | 11/24/09 | Great jacket, but I'd move the ties down. They DO look like they're too high. C'mon, it'll take you half an hour - you don't even have to open the whole seam! | | * * * | | LorrieAnn | 11/24/09 | Lovely color, and very nicely sewn. The added length is perfect, and the ties add a nice shaping. Leave them as is. | | * * * | | Aixoise | 11/24/09 | I actually think the ties look fine; however, if they really irk you, it wouldn't be all that difficult or time-consuming to move them. This is a very flattering jacket and beautifully constructed. Maybe if you wear it a few times you'll get used to the ties and forget why you felt you needed to move them. | | * * * | | Rhoda K | 11/24/09 | Beautiful jacket and looks very nice on you. | | * * * | | senaSews | 11/25/09 | Beautiful jacket. Nice collar and i love the front ties! | | * * * | |
