The dress turned out great and your daughter looks beautiful in it. The next time you might just use self fabric binding (if you have enough fabric left) or purchased seam binding for the waist seam or simply zigzag the seam edges together. Before I got my serger, I used to just zigzag (set close together, almost a satin stitch) just above the seamline and trim, and it looked fine.
