The top looks great, but I understand your issue with the fabric. I have done this myself and have found that an overnight soak in a fairly strong mixture of cold water and cheap (the soapy feeling pink stuff) fabric softener works wonders to soften up the fabric. You may need to do it a few times, drying in the dryer on low with a towel or two to beat it up a bit, but it will soften the fabric. Think of your favorite old apron that was once so crisp, and is now a soft old friend. You are basically aging the fabric, so be prepared for some fading.
