| Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I wanted to make a leotard incorporating the lightning symbol and the gym colors for where I make and consign leotards. I basically pinned my top pieces to corresponding bottom parts and traced over folded plastic I use for patterns. Then I cut and have a full front or back I can use for design changes. I line up the front and back pieces so any change I do to the front will follow thru to the back. I mark and cut out design pieces. I mark as a note to myself to add 1/4" (for serging) seam allowances when I cut the fabric. I make sure to mark in a way that I will know which is the top of pattern as these are often one-way designs and cutting the piece upside down won't work...wanna know how I know? If it is particularly confusing lines, I will make notch marks before I cut the pieces apart. For this lightning bolt leo, I ended up with this
I will note that shapes that have corners to pivot are difficult to sew with this type fabric. This kind of leotard about triples my production time.
side seam with design meeting
Pattern Description: Three views of leotards, either sleeveless or long sleeves
Pattern Sizing: From little girl small to large adult, multi-size to be traced. I made a girl's size 12
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Mostly, other than the design changes I made. stars and strips leotard
Were the instructions easy to follow? They were.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked that there was a crotch lining. I believe it is there so the seam gets covered and less likelihood to rub. I did not like the method of applying the neck and back bands. I used a method from Kwik Sew. I prefer encasing the band seams rather than just folding and applying, as the Jalie instructions direct.
Fabric Used:I used stretch velvets, the stars one is glittery. I had to line the white stretch velvet as it would have been a little see-thru. It was the same weight as the red. I think white fabric in general has the potential for not being as opaque as we would hope. I lined the white with swimsuit nude lining.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:I had wanted to try my hand at designing a wave-type color block. Basically, I cut the pattern body pieces out in red. I lined up the sides and drew a design line from the front thru the back. I cut out along the design line. I then overlapped the cut-out pieces at the side seam and put that on my white fabric as a pattern piece, except I added 1/2" seam allowances all around, which gave me 1/4" to serge from the red and the white. The white piece had no side seam to complicate putting it in and for a smoother fit.
I basted in the white piece before serging so there would be no slippage with the velvet back of leotard
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes and yes
Conclusion: I used to make leotards when my girls were in gymnastics till about 8-ish years ago. When my daughter saw this one, her face clouded up and she said, "You never made US any that cool!" I guess that means it looks good
