I might just be inept at getting two opposite facing curves to go together, but the clipping was quite necessary for me. I also, in hindsight, wish I would have hand stitched the last part of the strap, after turning, when you fold the seam allowance in on the back side. They show the straps being joined along the inward curved edge when infact you have to join the outward curved edge of the strap to the top of the bodice section.
