updated with some pictures of the pants i made for my sisters. Both were done in a soft warm flannel, with patch pockets near the knees.

Sounds really cute and versatile. I would still take that pajama shirt, and seam it with the serger wherever it was too large. If the neckline, I would either add to bring it up after removing the band, or just redo the band. I would seam straight down the back. I would remove the sleeves and put darts in. Well, I am not married, so I can walk around like that. But if you fix that shirt to fit you, you will have a t shirt muslin at no cost At least, one for knits.
