Sounds like a muslin would help, and fit from that. The pattern is way off as you say. Certainly an ambitious project. Probably you have to create a pattern from old pattern making books or off a tracing of a pair that fits well

I am making these and find they are high waisted. I have the zipper on and the pockets, all up to the waistband. I too am in search of a good man's pants pattern
