Your bag looks really cute. Too bad you experienced so much frustration with it. I have looked at this pattern myself and never once considered that the shape might be a problem. Very helpful info. Be sure to let us know how your next one turns out.

Looks great, too bad it doesn't function so well. I feel your pain- it's happened to me on numerous occasions, both with bags and clothes.

Nice bag! That stinks about it not holding any weight, but it sounds like you've got great ideas for making it work the second time around! Looking forward to seeing your next bag.

well, I think it's one of the cutest little bags I've ever seen, anyway.

Thanks for reveiwing this bag - it looks great. Hope you can figure a way to make it more useful. Do you think upholstery type fabric would work? Also, what is the boning used for - I saw it listed in the materials list.

Thanks everbody! Peggy, I think upholstery weight fabric would be a good choice; maybe I'll trythat when I remake this bag :) The boning is used at the joining of the flap to the back panel to reinforce that area.

That is a great looking bag. The pattern photos look really cute, too. They must be stuffed with newspaper for the photos! Thanks for this review. I hadn't thought of the shape of the bag being such a big factor in being able to hold anything with a little weight to it.

Pretty bag and I understand the frustration of not holding its shape.

Wow, what a cute bag!! I have this pattern, but have not made it yet, so I thank you for the wonderful review. I wondered about the "collapse" factor and you've answered my question. I'll be sure to have your review by my side when I make the bag. If you make it again, please tell us what you did different.

Hmm... Based on Peggy L mentioning boning... Have you considered maybe using 1/2" steel boning in rows to stiffen the bottom of the bag? They're flexible enough that you can manipulate them thru a casing. Several steels would add weight to it, tho'.

You CAN have the best of both worlds... fuse your fun prints to a stiffer fabric. :-)

Despite your problems, the bag appears quite lovely. I too have this pattern and plan to make it soon. And, given your problems with the bag, I will definitely try upholsery fabric, canvas backing, interfacing, etc. But since I haven't constructed it, I don't know whether my suggestion for fixiing the shape problem will work. Would plastic canvas work? If you cut a piece to fit and tucked it between the lining and exterior of the bag, it would lend more support without being too stiff.

The bag is adorable! The plastic canvas works for me in my bags. I add a piece of batting and cover the whole thing with coordinating fabric from the purse. To make it a bit more stable, I make decorative stay stiches around the piece and put it in.

I wonder if you used a piece of 3/8" plexiglass like Lazy Girl's Bag E Bottoms, whether that would help. I usually buy plexiglass by the sheet and cut it myself however I know in a pinch acrylic 3/8" from the frame section of the craft stores will do the trick, cut to size and slipped in between the bottom and the inside bottom. Just a suggestion.
