Re: topstitching: did you try using jeans thread on top and regular thread on the bottom? You'd have to fiddle with the upper thread tension, I think (I would never mess with bobbin thread tension on my own), but maybe that would work. 5/26/04 2:58 PM
Melissa S. said... The jeans look great! I might have to try this pattern myself. BTW, you can get rivets from The Green Pepper. I don't see the rivets on their website, but they are available in Antique Nickel or Antique Brass. They come in a package of 40 for $4.00. HTH. 5/26/04 3:22 PM
Dovie said... Thank you all for you kind comments. We are very excited about these! I have to do a fit test for myself, but there won't be too much to adjust. I am a little more petite and a bit taller than my mom, but similar. As is, her jeans fit me better than anything in my closet. I will have to look for the twin needle for denim. Not only would that help with the eveness, it would make the construction go much faster! I did do a couple of bartacks with regular thread in the bobbin and it didn't snarl as bad but I had some trouble with it pulling the bottom thread up to the top. Clearly a tension issue. I will have to play with it more. Thanks for the heads up on the rivets. I have requested a catalog. Can't wait til it gets here. :) 5/26/04 3:36 PM

I never thought I'd want to make jeans but it's nearly impossible for me to buy a decent fitting RTW pair. Your review has INSPIRED me! 5/29/04 10:32 AM
Dovie said... You are all very, very kind. :) Thanks for all the great tips, too. These really were not difficult at all, just time consuming. So go for it if you've been thinking about it. I chose the size based on her hip measurement only compared to the envelope. Then I tissue fitted them loosely based on the recommendations in "Pants for Real People". The back part of the leg was a little full, but other than that they fit amazingly well to begin with. The tissue fitting was actually kind of fun (my first attempt to do this) and it was neat to see the major changes that just a little tweaking would make. I will definitely take the time to do this with future projects. 5/29/04 3:09 PM
