Matrix like the movie? I had to smile when I saw the description. For the buttons, can you sew them on by machine? Maybe velcro dots (not a long, stiff strip, just small pieces strategically placed). Perhaps a separating zipper in the center front?

He looks comfortable in it! The buttons look nice, but I'm sure both you would enjoy the zipper.
