I love the fabric that the original designer, MomoMadeIt, chose and I was able to find one that was similar at Jo-Ann's in their quilting cottons. I am very happy with the result.
The instructions were completely straight forward and easy to follow. I think beginners might get tripped up on the pin tucks and applying 1/4" bias binding though, so I would not recommend it for beginners unless they has some pointers.
These are the pointers I wish had been included in the pattern: For pin tucks, make sure you have a new needle and the pattern is serious when it says to stitch as close as you can to the edge of the fold. Maybe that seems silly, but the pattern could have said stitch 1/16th of an inch from the edge instead of as close as you can. Come to think of it, it would have been nice to have detailed instructions on making the pin tucked bib. Like the best way to mark the fabric and press it, etc. I am sure the original designer has her tricks and tips she could have shared since she makes aprons all day long. I would have loved to learn exactly how she does it instead of figuring out the details on my own.
My pointer for the 1/4" bias binding is to open it up and stitch to the back side first as you might for binding a quilt. Then fold it around the fabric and top stitch to the front side. I made 4 of these aprons for Christmas gifts and found that just applying the 1/4 inch bias as suggested on the pattern was tricky going around the curves. I had to remove quite a few stitches when the binding slipped off the edge of the apron. Stitching it twice was actually quicker than doing it once with mess ups.
I will be making more of these because they were a huge hit for gifts. My mom wore hers all day on Christmas. My sister was almost speechless about how beautiful it is. I would highly recommend this pattern for anyone looking to make a gift for someone who enjoys cooking and serving. My daughter and I wore matching tuxedo aprons as we served punch at my son's concert reception. They add a professional touch. Oooh, I just though of another friend who needs one!
