This is an excellent review! I'm so glad I clicked on it. Your caution on the type of fabric to use is a lesson I keep learning over and over. Also, I asked that 5/8-3/8 trim the armhole question in a review not too long ago. Two of the commenters explained that if I had used the view with the sleeve, that extra 5/8" would be necessary to insert the sleeve. If I used the band to finish a sleeveless armhole, I would need only the 1/4" (5/8 less 3/8) margin to attach the band. Not sure this applies here, but it might since there is a sleeved version and a user might decide to move the sleeve from one view to the sleeveless view. But the band on bias does definitely sound odd. Great job. Hope you post the next one as a review, too. (By the way, I added you to my favorite reviewers list based just on this review.)
