Great job and congrats on your first dress (and first pattern review!) The seam technique you ended up using is similar to a Hong Kong finish. You can see it here: http://behindtheseams.wordpress.com/2010/05/20/hong-kong-finish-tutorial/

Wow! Congrats on ur 1st dress and pattern review! WIN! It looks great! I also skipped understitching initially as I didn't know what it was either! It is really easy though and helps keep lining/facings from rolling to the outside. Most other pattern companies show a little diagram on their instructions. Here's a link on how to understitch and layer seams. (grading = 'layer seam') Keep em coming! http://www.learntosewcalgary.ca/articles/gradingunderstitching.htm

Very nice job, especially for your first dress. When I started a couple years ago, I tended to just wing it as well. Most of the patterns explain some of the terminology at the beginning of the instructions. Great dress!

Sorry, got more to say ;) ... just looked at your blog on the dress -- a French Seam would have been perfect for this dress, or bias tape... you put a LOT of work into this dress!

Ok. You're a 'beginner' ... this is your '1st dress' ... I think you did great. Dress looks just like the pattern and the stripes are straight! :) This looks like a great 'beginner' pattern. Understitching is helpful and many patterns just assume you know what you're doing. Suggestion on hemming? I would have done what you did... but blind hemming is also an idea, but you need a special foot (which you may already have). Practice with it and you might like the option. Your dress looks good!
