Your dress looks REALLY nice, although it's hard to see the details -- could you possibly post a bit larger photo? It looks to me like you did an amazing job, and I don't just mean for a "hapless novice." ;) Congratulations on surviving your first zipper experience, too. It will get easier, don't worry.

Great job! I agree with Vintage Joan - zippers get easier. You may consider using an invisible zipper and invisible zipper foot. (I like YKK's best.) Somehow, I find them the easiest to work with and they look so clean. Very cute dress :)
