To help with the hem waviness, you might try something called "wonder tape" which you can get at Joann's. It's a doublestick fabric tape that washes out the first wash so it shouldn't change the feel of the garment. Or maybe a soft knit interfacing would stabilize it enough and still be a soft hem.
