|I made this for a production of the kids' musical "Pinkalicious", because I couldn't find a blue bird costume anywhere for a full grown man. This took me almost two weeks to construct, mostly because of the feathers (there are about 180 in the adult costume). This is a pattern that requires LOTS of patience because the feathers are tedious to make. The construction of the actual suit went fairly smoothly except when turning the lining in. Somewhere there was confusion in the instructions so I ended up with only one armhole! I undid my sewing and just added the lining the rest of the way by hand. The costume is also stuffed with fiberfill to fill out the body. This works fairly well but you do end up with a very bottom-heavy bird.|
The one fitting issue we had was that the wings were not long enough so he couldn't dance with his arms all the way in the sleeves (there is a hole so you can use your hands when you need and then pop them back in the rest of the time, kind of like a cape).
Also, it is hard to tell on the pattern itself, but there are no feathers on the sides or back of the body. Just the stomach, wings, a ring around the neck and for the tail.
By the way, I did not make the head part of the costume, either, we just used a mask.
